What does video in the classroom look like?

Video in the classroom has many different applications. It might be helpful for us to share how we have used or might like to use video in the classroom. This would give us something to springboard into more discussion around the "how to" factor.

I've used video in a couple of ways.
<ul>
<li>for instruction</li>
<li>as a "hook"</li>
<li>as a way to differentiate assessment</li>
</ul>

I am really trying to stress video this year with the teachers at my school. I see it as a way to motivate resistant learners and to enlive dull material. I partnered with an English teacher last year to produce this <a href="http://staffdev.henrico.k12.va.us/~woodwatw/R3V2_Big.mov">Richard III video</a> to summarize parts of the play. It went over very well with the students and has opened some doors for me with other teachers. We use video to teach about student iBook care as well (<a href="http://staffdev.henrico.k12.va.us/~woodwatw/movies/charger_accident.mp4">clip one</a>, <a href="http://staffdev.henrico.k12.va.us/~woodwatw/movies/drinking_dangers.mov">clip two</a>) which makes pretty dry material entertaining and certainly gets the point across.

The best experience I had using video was teaching in an alternative school. We read portions of a novel and then created paperbag puppet characters, sets, etc. and re-wrote the sections and acted them out. I filmed the students and then added in a soundtrack and sound effects. They each got a copy of the DVD at the end of the project. I never saw students work as hard or enjoy the work as much. The key was being able to show them their work and make it look professional. They were so proud when we would show it to visitors. These kids were poverty level and at the school primarily for disciplinary offenses so motivating them was difficult but this was a great success.

These are great ideas and tips. Thanks for the samples. "The key was being able to show them their work and make it look professional." This is so important for the students, but it also an important story for educators and parents to see.
Thanks!
